Microelectronics or nanoelectronics is one of the most dynamically developing fields of technology in the world. It deals with the design and fabrication of semiconductor components based on submicron technologies, starting from the simplest diodes, over transistors to integrated circuits, the so called very large scale integration (VLSI) chips. It means that on a small area of several square mm we are able to produce chips such as converters, filters, memories, 64-bit microprocessors and other components. Nowadays, integrated circuits and components can be found in all electronic products. Without microelectronics there would not be computers, mobile phones, TV sets, simply said no modern electronic devices.

Microelectronics or nanoelectronics is a rapidly developing field of science, influencing all areas of human activity. Without microlectronics we would not be able to produce computers, TV sets, mobile phones, simply all electronic devices as we know them today. Why? Because mobile phones, computers, radio sets, cars or spaceships are composed of many components, the most important of them being the tiny components called chips, bringing the whole device to life. You may have come across the slang word ‘bug’ as they look exactly like this kind of insect, large numbers of legs protruding from a small black box. The chips – bugs are the heart and brain of any electronic device. The chips measure, calculate, control and communicate with other components and this way bring IPhone and many other devices to life.

The design, development and testing of chips are taught at the Department of Microeletronics. The heart and brain in the human body need a number of supporting organs, and similarly the chips need auxiliary components. Therefore microelectronics does not simply mean chips, but also programming them to measure, calculate, control and communicate correctly. We have to know how to use them together with other components to make a notebook, for example, how to make them communicate - transmission of data and commands in a wireless communication system. The components must be made of suitable materials. That is why microelectronics also involves study of materials and technologies . You can choose from the offered optional subjects and specialize in the particular area of micro- and nanoelectronics you are interested in.
